Visitors to Bequia
will find a variety of local arts and crafts in the
boutiques of Port Elizabeth and at artists' studios
around the island. Model boats, scrimshaw,
woodcarving and crochet are among the craftworks of
Bequians carrying on the island skills of boat
building and net making. Artists from other lands
but living in Bequia incorporate local images and
materials into their work, and add paintings,
ceramics, stained glass clothing and textiles to the
varied mix of artistic creations to be found on the
island.
While you are on Bequia, do take the opportunity to visit Bequia artists and artisans; not only will you chance upon many real treasures, you will also meet some unique individuals, each with their own stories to tell. If you are lucky, your visit will coincide with an Arts and Crafts Fair, held under the Almond Tree in Port Elizabeth, where a wide range of local artists and craftsmen offer their work for sale. Opening
hours for artist studios vary, especially in the
summer season, and some visits are by appointment
only. Check with the artists themselves or at the BTA
office.
